Professional mercenary Dare Macintosh lives by one hard and fast rule: business should never be personal. If a cause appeals to him and the price is right, he’ll take the mission he’s offered. But then the lovely Molly Alexander asks him to help her track down the men who’d had her kidnapped—and for the first time, Dare’s tempted to combine work with pleasure.
Fiercely independent, Molly vows to trust no one until she’s uncovered the truth. Could the enemy be her powerful estranged father? The ex-fiancé who still holds a grudge? Or the not-so-shy fan of her bestselling novels? As the danger heats up around them, the only anchor Molly has is Dare himself. But what she feels for him just might be the most frightening thing of all….
“Good grief, Molly. He doesn’t scare you?”
“Of course not.”
“He’s sweet,” Molly insisted.
Dare snorted. “He’s still listening.”
When you Dare is the first book in a new series by Lori Foster (Men who Walk the Edge of Honor). Let me tell you, I will read anything Lori Foster writes, including her grocery list. Her heroes are always something special, alpha males who are fiercely devoted to the women in their lives.
The book starts out with the aftermath Dare’s successful rescue of his friend Alani Rivers, sister to his associate, Trace, from human traffickers. But Dare has come back with an extra passenger, someone who seems to have been treated differently than Alani and the other girls. Right from the start, Dare realizes that this woman, Molly, is different in so many ways. I know, isn’t that always the case? Dare expects Molly to be coy and gun-shy but the first thing he gets is a kick to the nose. Molly is no retiring wallflower, as we soon find out.
What follows is their investigation into her kidnapping. They grow close quickly, as Dare takes Molly to his home because they are not sure where she is safe. He vows to protect her and find whoever has done this to her. She, in return, continues to fascinate him with her independent ways, but she also needs him more than she would like to admit. And the sexual chemistry, wowza. I always love Foster’s heroes; they are seemingly unwilling to fall in love, but when they meet their match, they catch fire. Dare is no different.
The mystery in the story is interesting. Who kidnapped Molly and why? Foster doesn’t disappoint. This story introduces several characters, including Dare’s best friend Chris, and Trace and Alani Rivers, the central characters in the next two books of the series, Trace of Fever and Savor the Danger. When You Dare follows a novella from Foster, Ready, Set, Jett, in the anthology The Guy Next Door (with Victoria Dahl and Susan Donovan), whose heroine, Natalie is our Molly’s sister. It’s not necessary that you read that one first, but it is a good story. And then read the rest of the series, because these books are amazing. Cannot wait for the fourth book in the series, A Perfect Storm.
