Story Breakdown:

Cinder, a cyborg, is forced to be an indentured servant to her stepmother and step sisters after her step-father is killed by a mysterious plague-like illness on Earth.  In her work as a mechanic to support them she helps out the Crown Prince and by doing so catches his attention in more ways than one drawing her into a world of politics, death, and the safety of mankind.

Character Highlights:

Cinder  – What an interesting character!  I’ve been reading more and more books with sci-fi elements and this is by far the best to date and I think it’s because of Cinder.  I love that she is friends with an android and like Cinderella herself she is the ultimate in self-sacrifice.  It was interesting to watch her balance her cyborg side with her human side since she didn’t come off as just some machine doing what she was told, part of her is still part “normal”.

Kai –  I’m really liking him so far.  He acts like a true leader, though young he is still willing to do what is necessary for his people and doesn’t come off at all like a spoiled child that isn’t getting his way.  He’s also willing to fight for what he wants and what is right.  I look forward to reading much more about him further into the series.

Overall Thoughts:  First off, this book was well worth the hype.  I know we’ve all done it.  Avoid starting a series because so many people have raved about the greatness.  But this one?  Totally worth every single second.  I was engaged page one and loved every single thing.  Knowing the Cinderella fairy tale you have a basic understanding where the story is going but there is just so much more to this story and world that Ms Meyer has built that I don’t even know what to talk about.  The Lunar people?  THERE ARE MOON PEOPLE?!  There is a whole other world that we’ve barely scratched the surface on!!  If you are a fan of sci-fi, YA, love stories, retellings, heck just books in general you will love this one.  Thank God I bought book two, Scarlet already.

I know, Cinder was totally deserved all the hype it received. I still can’t believe how much I loved this book, and it’s sequel Scarlet, because science fiction isn’t really my thing. Marissa Meyer is totally awesome!!!! I’m so glad that you liked it, too.
