Do the gates keep the unchosen out or the chosen in?

In Mandrodage Meadows, life seems perfect. The members of this isolated suburban community have thrived under Pioneer, the charismatic leader who saved them from their sad, damaged lives. Lyla Hamilton and her parents are original members of the flock. They moved here following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, looking to escape the evil in the world. Now seventeen, Lyla knows certain facts are not to be questioned:

Pioneer is her leader.

Will is her Intended.

The end of the world is near.

Like Noah before him, Pioneer has been told of the imminent destruction of humanity. He says his chosen must arm themselves to fight off the unchosen people, who will surely seek refuge in the compound’s underground fortress–the Silo.

Lyla loves her family and friends, but given the choice, she prefers painting to target practice. And lately she’d rather think about a certain boy outside the compound than plan for married life in the Silo with Will. But with the end of days drawing near, she will have to pick up a gun, take a side, and let everyone know where she stands.

Story Breakdown:

After suffering a family tragedy over 10 years ago Lyla and her parents are swept up by the promises of a man called Pioneer.  They believe in him and what he stands for. Trusting that he is receiving information and instructions from his Gods known as the Brethren, they become part of his followers as “chosen” people who will be rescued at the end of the world.  As the end of time as they know it draws near Lyla starts to worry about what exactly is happening and if they put their trust in the wrong person.

Character Highlights:

Lyla – I LOVED her.  There wasn’t one thing she did that I found annoying or questioned.  I felt she was a true and honest teen voice and I believed in her and her choices.  To me one of the strongest characters I’ve read in quite awhile.  It takes A LOT to stand up to the only thing you’ve ever known.

Pioneer –  Wow.  So interesting.  While not your classic villain he was a wonderful character to delve into.  It’s not often you read about stories like these from the inside and seeing the amount of control one person can have over others.

Overall Thoughts:

THIS BOOK.  It was so great!  This is not a normal pick for me at all but reading the blurb I thought I was getting into some sort of book version of The Village.  So not the case!  It truly was scary seeing how much control one person can have over others using manipulation and fear.  I also thought there was a great balance of thriller and swoon without over doing anything.

This is definitely a fast-paced read that will keep you turning the pages.  I’m definitely keeping my eyes open for future titles by Ms Parker.  Go check out this book ASAP!

I am such a sucker for Cult-themed books! Btw: have you read The Believing Game by Eireann Corrigan? It had a master manipulator like Pioneer in it too, that book seriously messed with my head-it was GREAT:)
