Top 10 Tuesday #84

Top 10 Secondary Characters

1.  Minnie from The Help by Kathryn Stockett — Sometimes she was a little much for me because I don’t really like confrontational, semi belligerent characters, but there is something about Minnie that really makes the story that much better.  I especially loved her relationship with Celia.

2.  Tina Hakim Baba from The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot — She’s a much better friend to Mia than Lilly. Lilly was all snark and smug intelligence, but Tina was sweet and kind and actually more on the same level as Mia.

3.  Chaz in the Queen of Babble series by Meg Cabot — This is kind of cheating because Chaz does become an important character, but I loved him so much in the first two books…

4.  Ranger in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich — I’m totally hot for Ranger. Steph can have Joe Morelli and I’ll be glad to take Ranger off her hands.  He is a fantastic alpha hero, stoic and very smart.  I find myself impatiently waiting for him to show up when I’m reading. Love him so much.

5.  Bingley and Jane in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen — Yeah, I couldn’t let a top 10 go without mentioning my favorite book.  I love these two characters. Mr. Bennet said it best:

Your tempers are by no means unlike.  You are each of you so complying, that nothing will ever be resolved on; so easy, that every servant will cheat you; and so generous, that you will always exceed your income.

6.  Iko in the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer — I listened to Cinder on audio, so Iko’s voice is very distinctive to me.  This android who longs to be human is so dear and sweet and loyal, I was very happy when she was returned to us in Scarlet.  Plus, I think Iko’s one of the only people I really like that I could consider a secondary character, because even if they are now, I think the other characters, like Thorne, could become more important in the next books.

7.  Magnus Bane in The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments books — Magnus is likely to be on a lot of lists today.  I am more of a fan of his in the ID books because I didn’t really understand him much in the first books of the MI books.  He just seemed like a somewhat annoying, know-it-all extra character in MI. But we already know some of his history in ID and I think he’s actually more fleshed out there.

8.  Simon in The Mortal Instruments books — I have a soft spot in my heart for the underdog, the one who doesn’t get the girl, but Simon holds his own, though his infatuation, love, for Clary is not returned the way he would like.  I think he’s by far my favorite character in the series.  He’s funny, smart, sarcastic, adorable…everything I love in a character.

9.  Zuzana & Mik in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor — They are not a BIG presence in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but Taylor makes up for it in Days of Blood and Starlight.  I love them individually, but they really work best together.  They bring a light-heartedness to the books, just like their effect on the chimera soldiers at the Saharan compound.

10.  Ziri in Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor — This new character was such a welcome addition to the second book in this series.  I love him SO MUCH and I have a lot of hope placed in him for the next and final book in the series.  My hope:  He’ll take Akiva’s place in Karou’s heart (…don’t kill me.)

So that’s it for today.  I realize I didn’t have to stretch too far, using different characters from the same books, but these are some of my favorite books and it would make sense that I love more than one character.  Who are your favorite secondary characters?

YES to Zuzana and Iko. I love Iko SO much, and she’s not even a human. That says a lot about how awesome her character is.

I’ve seen Iko listed on several blogs today. I really can’t believe I didn’t think of her! You’re right — she’s a very endearing robot. And I don’t even like robots!

endearing, the perfect description for Iko. truthfully, the robot aspect is what had me not really wanting to read Cinder, but I was so wrong 🙂 I’m glad I finally did read it.

I love that you mentioned Iko! I didn’t love Cinder (although I did love Scarlet), but Iko was definitely one of my favorite parts of both books!
