Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.
Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

I was half lawyer; I always notice the loopholes.
Heaven has fashioned a knife of irony to stab me with.
Seraphina – I liked her part in the story and though she might not have done what I believe I would have in certain situations I didn’t find myself frustrated with her, only curious as to why she made the decision she did. I found the mysteries behind her friends who live in the “garden” captivating and look forward to meeting more!
Orma – I just loved the dryness of dragon personalities, Orma especially. Definitely a fresh take on dragons and I enjoyed watching him try to understand his sister’s actions and carry out her wishes even though it went against his entire upbringing.
This book was a very different and surprising YA book. There isn’t some crazy angst-filled love triangle (at least not in book one); heck there isn’t even much of a romance but there is a ton of political intrigue, world-class friendships, selfless families, and a beautiful written and sophisticated story about a girl who just happens to be a teen. I found myself so invested in the plot that when anything resembling romance popped up I wanted them to get back to the story! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and loved that Ms Hartman didn’t spare her story to conform to the ideal YA book. I’m very eager to pick up book two stat and hope for more of the same! Any fan of fantasy or just dragons in general is sure to enjoy this wonderful addition to the mix.
