Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?

Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

Hannah is returning home to LA after spending most of her post high school life moving around the country, nomad-like. She decides to go out on the town with her best friend and they meet up with high school friends, one of whom is her ex-boyfriend, Ethan. At the end of the night, Hannah must choose to leave with Gabby or with Ethan. From that point, we see how the different scenarios play out, alternating by chapter.

Let me say that I loved this book! I was interested initially because of the cool premise. It reminded me of the book/movie Sliding Doors (which I actually rewatched just last week). I immediately got sucked in and fell hard for Ethan in the first few chapters. It was pretty interesting to see how wildly the two universes veered from each other and how Hannah’s choice not only affected her life but also those around her. And I LOVED Gabby. I had a personal favorite “life” and it was different than the one I expected to prefer because it was the more unexpected one. I really appreciated how unpredictable the story ended up being and I think most readers will agree.

There is a lot of talk in the book about fate and how the choices we make affect our lives. Hannah goes back and forth in both incarnations about whether fate is real or if we choose our own path. I quite enjoyed her journey and seeing how she grew up and eventually accepts responsibility for her life and her choices. This is my first book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, but I do have her other books on my TBR. Maybe in Another Life was entertaining and thought provoking and had just the right amount of drama and romance.

Oh, you must definitely give her other novels a shot! She’s one of my favorite adult contemporary authors. I really like how MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE had me thinking about choices and destiny, and how maybe both these things affect our lives – whether we recognize it or not. I’m glad you enjoyed this one! (I also really adored Gabby.)
