Sweet Little Lies by Jill Shalvis (Heartbreaker Bay #1)

Choose the one guy you can’t have . . .

As captain of a San Francisco Bay tour boat, Pru can handle rough seas—the hard part is life on dry land. Pru loves her new apartment and her neighbors; problem is, she’s in danger of stumbling into love with Mr. Right for Anybody But Her.

Fall for him—hard . . .

Pub owner Finn O’Riley is six-foot-plus of hard-working hottie who always makes time for his friends. When Pru becomes one of them, she discovers how amazing it feels to be on the receiving end of that deep green gaze. But when a freak accident involving darts (don’t ask) leads to shirtless first aid, things rush way past the friend zone. Fast.

And then tell him the truth.

Pru only wants Finn to be happy; it’s what she wishes for at the historic fountain that’s supposed to grant her heart’s desire. But wanting him for herself is a different story—because Pru’s been keeping a secret that could change everything. . .

Pru seeks out Finn, who has a connection to her that he doesn’t know about. She’s looking to make amends for something that changed both of their lives. What ends up happening, of course, is that she falls for him while also keeping the secret of their connection. The whole time she feels guilty about keeping her secret but she can’t seem to stay away from him or confess.

I love Jill Shalvis’ books. She never fails to make me laugh and make me fall in love with her characters. This first novel in the Heartbreaker Bay series was very well done, sweet, sexy. I loved the characters and the setting. It’s definitely a departure for her to go from a small town/mountain setting (like most of her novels) to a big city like San Francisco. It felt fresh and different. I also liked the secondary characters a lot and their connection to one another. I look forward (very much so) to reading about the rest of the group falling in love.

The chemistry was off the charts hot. Like, Sawyer and Chloe hot. I enjoy an alpha male, but all the better when he’s a little vulnerable, too. I just want to take care of Finn. Pru was also a fantastic character who I really rooted for. I rarely read straight romance anymore, but I can’t pass up Jill Shalvis books. They’re my coconut cake. I’ll be up late at night, until the last morsel is finished. And always craving more.

  1. I’m reading this right now. I love Jill Shalvis too, but I’m a little frustrated with the whole “big secret” thing. I don’t really care for that. But I do really love Finn, and this little community. I just hate the big secret thing so much. Also, Thor is adorable! Jill Shalvis writes the best animals in her stories.

    1. I agree about the “big lie” trope-it’s probably why I didn’t give it a higher rating. But I do love Jill Shalvis and she shall be forgiven for much.
