In a Nutshell 02/14/20

Hello!!

We know we’ve been gone for a bit but thought it was time to get back out there and connect with everyone.  Life seems to get in the way of our reading and bookish tendencies so we are going to try to add “check in” posts once a week of what we have been up to all week.  This could be reading, watching tv, or just taking naps because sometimes that is what we might need.

Let’s see what Daph was up to. . .

In the last week I have read:

You Were There Too by Colleen Oakley (review forthcoming)

Hunting Prince Dracula (audio & paperback) by Kerri Maniscalco

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (audio) by JK Rowling

The Grave Robber by Mark Batterson

In the last week I’ve watched:

Late Night (Mindy Kaling & Emma Thompson, Amazon Prime), Mindy and Emma are not in enough things! rating 4.5/5

Harriet (Cynthia Erivo & Leslie Odom, Jr) — my boys and I have been wanting to watch this movie and it was certainly a worthwhile and entertaining movie, keeping us all on the edge of our seats. Very illuminating about Harriet Tubman’s life and the life of a slave and the pre-civil war life in general. Cynthia Erivo was a revelation! Very well deserved Oscar nomination. Also, I didn’t know that Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles was in it & that was a nice surprise! I mean, yes, she was a shrill, racist slaveowner, but she did a great job. 5/5

Last Christmas (Emilia Clarke & Henry Golding) — what a sweet movie. I knew going in what was really going on (because internet) but I was really surprised by the depth of the movie and how much I was moved by these characters. Particularly loved Michelle Yeoh & Emma Thompson’s characters. 4/5

Doctor Who Series 8 (Peter Capaldi & Jenna Coleman) — I previously got only as far as season 7, so I never met the 12th Doctor so when I introduced my boys to Doctor Who this summer, I was looking forward to getting to this season. I am really enjoying this season, Clara, and Danny. Not finished with the season yet so I’m not going to rate it.

That’s it for me!

So what happened this week?

First, Daph started a Gone Pecan instagram!  Yes, I know we are 5 years behind but if you are so inclined feel free to follow, we’d appreciate your support!  You can find us @kiki.daphne and she will be posting photos of books we are reading, reviewing, or just random stuff – who knows what might pop up on the feed (I’m betting on puppies at some point.)

I finished a series!!  I read the third book of the Truly Devious series A Hand in the Hall by Maureen Johnson.  It was a fun series and I enjoyed the past story line quite a lot.

I read the latest in the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire, Come Tumbling Down which is about Jack and Jill who are by far my favorites.  God this series is so much fun!  I don’t think it is the last in the series, or at least I hope it isn’t.

I got back to The Raven King which I started last month but abandoned.  As I’ve said approximately 1,000 times I have issues letting go of series and never read the last book of The Raven Cycle so over the last few months I’ve reread the first three books to finally be able to finish the last.  Once I got to it though I needed a break as binging books for me isn’t as easy as a show on Netflix.  I’m hoping to finish it up this weekend and finally move on to Call Down the Hawk so I can start yet another reread of a different series I need to finish – there are A LOT.  You may be seeing a review for this one soon, but don’t hold me to that.

I stopped by the library and picked up my holds.  I still have a couple of library books checked out already and even though I’m TRYING to make myself read books I own to clear out and make room for new ones (or at least get the stacks off the floor) I picked up Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (casting news made me break) and A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. I’ve had several friends pick this up over the last few years but seeing it pop up again on Jamie’s insta (Perpetual Page Turner) I decided it was time to try it out for myself.  I’m always in for a good cry when reading – note to self DO NOT READ AT WORK.  I also picked up The Farewell (starring Awkafina) to watch.

I caught up on some podcasts!  I listen to a lot of podcasts while I work (it helps drown out coworkers and background noise) and listened to the latest episodes of My Favorite Murder, Lore, The Office Ladies, The Murder Squad, and Do You Need a Ride?.  I also listened to several of Dark Poutine though I’m only about halfway through the entire backlog of their podcast.  Do you have an recs?  Let me know!  I’m always looking for a new one to dive in to.  I’m REALLY excited for Brene Brown’s Unlocking Us which starts next month.

Today is Valentine’s Day and I’ve decided I’m buying myself flowers.  In my entire 37 years I have never gotten flowers from anyone and I’ve decided today I will and I’m getting them for myself because why not?

How was your week?
