Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before its too late?

Favorite Quote:  “Right now, I’m so happy to see you that I wouldn’t care if you’re secretly a ninja sent from the future to destroy kittens and rainbows.”

Fair warning, you should read the first two books in this series before proceeding, though I will try to not spoil anything for SB.  Spell Bound picks up where Demonglass left off.  Sophie has traveled through the Iterneris looking for the Brannicks where Cal says she will find her mother.  Turns out (surprise surprise) her mom is a Brannick and by default she is as well.  This is something I saw coming in Hex Hall and was 100% convinced of when Cal told her to look for her mom there.  Really why would he send her to the home of a supposed enemy unprotected?  After arriving and meeting her mom she is told that even though she thinks it is the next day, it has been three weeks since the attack.  Since the Casnoff’s have locked her powers she was stuck in limbo inside the Iterneris as it couldn’t recognize what she was exactly.

After her father (newly power free) and Cal show up the old fashion way they discuss what the Casnoffs are really doing.  They realize all the attacks on Hex Hall and the Council are actually the Casnoff’s doing, trying to make people believe the Eye and Brannicks are attacking and that their only hope is to create a demon army to protect them.  The Brannicks and Sophie’s family (I include Cal :P) make a plan to go to Lough Bealach in Ireland. It is a sacred area that used to be guarded by Brannicks and is said to be an opening to underworld where they need to try and collect demonglass to fight the demon army.  While is the process of leaving Sophie and Cal are transported to Hex Hall.  As members of the student body they are under a spell to return but all students are also blocked from using their powers on campus. Since I don’t want to give away the whole book, I’ll just say maybe it is a good thing Elodie is still handing around. . .  As Sophie is reunited with Archer and her bff Jenna, they uncover the Casnoff’s plan. Turn the students of Hex Hall into demons.  The remainder of the book follows Sophie and her friends trying to stop the Casnoffs in their evil plan.

Was it a good book?  Yes.  Did it wrap up everything in a nice little package?  Yes.  Did I like the ending?  No.  I know, I know, don’t hate me!!!  I don’t hate the book, just the way it ended but that is based strictly on one factor.  Cal.  He was hands down my favorite character and I was not a fan of how the story resolved for him.  If you liked this series you will still like the book.  Based on how much I laughed with all of these books I can’t wait to see what Ms. Hawkins does next!
